AQUAMON: Advanced QUAlity MOnitoring system of water in urbaN areas
Urban water pollution is a threat to ecosystems and public health. However, traditional monitoring systems often overlook pollution sources and pathways. The EU-funded AQUAMON project will introduce a smarter, more holistic approach. Specifically, it uses advanced sensors and unmanned vehicles across water, land, and air to monitor water quality in real time across eight pilot sites in Europe. The goal is to secure safe drinking water, improve wastewater reuse, protect urban bathing waters, and restore aquatic ecosystems. With integrated data and innovative control systems, AQUAMON supports a cleaner, more resilient water future for Europe. |

Danube Region Water Lighthouse Action
Home to nearly 80 million people, the Danube River Basin stretches across 19 European countries. Unfortunately, its main artery, the Danube River, is heavily affected by pollution. In this context, the EU-funded DALIA project will bring together 22 expert organisations from eight EU and associated countries to properly manage this complex and fragile ecosystem. The project will provide an integrated tool for better decision-making and improved restoration of fresh and transitional water ecosystems in the Danube River Basin. DALIA will contribute to the EU Water Framework Directive. It will also collaborate with a wider network of ecosystems and related EU Missions and projects. |

Improved Science-Based Maritime Spatial Planning to Safeguard and Restore Biodiversity in a coherent European MPA network
The protection and recovery of ecosystems can be facilitated with the use of knowledge-based marine spatial planning. The EU-funded MSP4BIO project will develop an integrated flexible socio-ecological management system to deal with a rapidly changing environment for coastal, offshore and deep-sea ecosystems. By validating this system at six test sites in five European sea basins, MSP4BIO will enhance approaches, methods and tools to increase scientific knowledge. Marine biodiversity scientists as well as planners and marine protected areas managers will benefit from this work, which will also support policy processes and decisions. In recent decades, the Danube River has faced increasing challenges from human interventions and climate change, disrupting its natural balance and posing risks to both ecosystems and communities. The EU-funded SUNDANSE project will address these issues head-on. Specifically, it will analyse and mitigate environmental impacts in the Danube River basin. Using advanced technology and innovative methodologies, the project will map critical sedimentation points, develop predictive models for sediment transport, and pioneer portable equipment for real-time analysis of microplastics and toxicity. By enhancing cooperation and governance across sectors, SUNDANSE strives to foster sustainable management practices that restore the Danube’s ecological health and resilience. |

iNNOvative SEDiment management in the Danube River Basin
The management of sediment in the Danube River Basin presents a critical environmental challenge. The alteration of sediment balance has become a pressing issue, decreasing habitat quality, increasing natural hazards, and worsening navigational conditions. Furthermore, industries, urban centres and agriculture require thorough sediment quality evaluations, but standardised monitoring is lacking. In response, the EU-funded iNNO SED project aims to launch the Danube Sediment ‘Lighthouse’ Knowledge Centre and to develop a Sediment Management Toolbox. These will boost our understanding of problems related to sediment quantity and quality, and will foster innovative solutions. By collaborating with stakeholders and Associated Regions, iNNO SED will also serve as a model for global river systems. The project aligns with the EU's mission to bolster competitiveness. |

Restoration of the Danube River basin waters for ecosystems and people from mountains to coast
Europe’s rivers are congested. More than a million barriers, like dams, ramps and fords, are causing extensive loss of river connectivity. In addition, human interventions have ecologically degraded a whopping 70 to 90 % of Europe’s floodplain. Despite ambitious EU policy to turn things around, fresh and transitional water ecosystem restoration remains limited. The EU-funded DANUBE4all project will develop a comprehensive restoration action plan for the Danube River basin lighthouse. The project will engage stakeholders, integrating citizens’ interests to support the EU Mission ‘Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030’ in an unprecedented cocreation process. The Waterwisw Hub: an excellence hub on water in the circular economy
Water scarcity and pollution are serious problems in many countries, including Romania, Greece and parts of the Western Balkans. These challenges threaten public health, agriculture and the economy. Traditional water management systems are often inefficient, leading to wasted resources and increased environmental damage. To address this, innovative solutions are needed that prioritise sustainability and reuse. In this context, the EU-funded WaterWise Hub project is tackling these issues by promoting circular economy practices in water management. It brings together governments, research centres, businesses and communities to create smarter, more sustainable water systems. The work centres on developing new technologies, supporting entrepreneurs and sharing knowledge to drive long-term change across the region. |
